Hi! It’s nice to see you. Thanks for coming to my Substack.
It’s crazy how long it’s been since a proper update. I started the year with big plans for this site, but life moves fast and I’m just now catching a breather. So, let me fill you in on the last few months.
Free Comic Book Day
While we’ve updated the Substack since FCBD, I haven’t written about it. Not because it wasn’t good - but because it was a nuts time. We had amazing guests, Jorge Corona and Morgan Beem and great staff and volunteers as always. But, it rained. Folks still came out, but it was a dreary mess and revenue was down from last year. C’est la vie. A mentor that I haven’t seen for years stopped dropped in to say hi. The guests were cool and vibes were good.
Comic Currents + Drawn the Sea
Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum curated an exhibit of comic artists illustrating stories about ships featured in their permanent collection. I was brought in to help assemble the catalog for the show, which (of course!) would be a comic book. I donated my time to edit and design the publication and the store paid for the first printing of Drawn to the Sea, which quickly sold out at the museum and is now on its second printing.
As a part of the education and community component of the exhibit, I organized Comic Currents, a convention featuring local and regional comic artists. It was on the eve of SCAD finals and the venue, while gorgeous, is tucked out of the public eye. Attendance didn’t quite meet expectations, but like Free Comic Book Day, the guests were cool and the vibes were good.
Expanding Magic
I still don’t know anything about Magic the Gathering, but our crowds are continuing to max out for Monday and Friday Commander nights. The last drop, themed to the Hobbit, has done well for us. We’ve expanded our educational events around Magic and have begun hosting Dungeons and Dragons events. We’re also in the Pokemon Play Network and hope to get those tournaments going soon.
Last Sundays
On the last Sunday of every month we host SAVAGE Zine Club in the morning and Open CoMIC Night in the evening. Make your minicomic to start your day and share it with friends at the end of it. Not bad for a lazy Sunday.
Collections
We’ve purchased some killer collections, from vintage superhero books to early Fantagraphics and Drawn and Quarterly harcovers and boxes of zines. Check em out at the Neighborhood Comics Clubhouse on Derenne.
Personal Life
Oh snap! You want to read about me? You got to pay, friend.
